Surfside is the small town heart of Miami’s beachfront. As ice cream shop owner Jessica shows us, you can find everything within a few short blocks in this delightfully cozy neighborhood. Lifelong Sunny Isles resident Justin shares the reasons he loves living there, which include being able to watch some of the most stunning sunrises in the world. In the 1950s, before the boom of high-rises, Sunny Isles was known as Motel Row and has since become a top international tourist destination. Fishing off the pier is a must, as is big-game fishing on a rented charter, and it’s a quick drive over the bridge to Oleta River State Park. Needless to say, there’s no shortage of excursions here.

As Biscayne Nature Center employee Claudia tells us, Key Biscayne used to be a coconut plantation owned by the Matheson family, which donated 800 acres to what is now Crandon Park. The beauty has been preserved, and people also flock to the island for killer golf courses and top-notch tennis competitions (Miami Open, anyone?). For a small village, there’s a distinctive vibe, complete with locals getting around on golf carts, and occasional celebrity spottings including Andy Garcia and Iggy Pop.

Steeped in the complex and rich cultural histories of the Afro-Caribbean immigrants who brought life to its area, Little Haiti has evolved into a colorful beacon in Miami’s arts communities. Throughout the years, small businesses like celebrated record stores, kitsch bars, and authentic eateries have eased into the neighborhood, creating their own particular patchwork within the already distinct Little Haiti.

Only an hour south from Miami’s sunny beaches, the Everglades leave you suddenly surrounded by rivers of grass. It’s is a totally different world, from the endangered species that call the subtropical wilderness home, to the vast range of watersports that could only be found in such diverse ecosystems. Forget beaches (although if you’re down, there’s always Biscayne National Park) -- we’re taking you to the mangroves, the hardwood hammocks, and the swamps.

According to Megan, Homestead is considered America’s fruit basket, and once you see the miles of produce and farms, you’ll understand why. Homestead was the first city built outside Miami, and the Hotel Redland was one of the first buildings constructed. You can still visit it today to view antiques, vintage furniture, and photographs. There’s also a ton of food and drink options in the area, plus fun outdoor activities such as strawberry picking and vineyard tours that add a different taste to the flavor of South Florida.

Hop on the free trolley and it’s a cinch to explore all of Doral. Near MIA, hotels, and two outstanding shopping malls, Doral is very popular among Latin Americans. In particular, Venezuelans love local restaurant El Arepazo. However, if you ask Ignacio, a longtime local teacher, musician, and boot camp leader, he’ll direct you to his favorite haunt – Shorty’s BBQ. Of course, if you’re ready for some top-tier luxury with a side of humility, he’ll point you to Trump National Doral Miami, home to an annual PGA event, as well as six golf courses, including the aptly named Blue Monster.

Let local Jose Fernandez take you on a stroll down Calle Ocho. He’s got it right when he says the neighborhood itself is a cultural museum, from its hand-rolled cigar shops to its open-air fruit markets. Everywhere you go you’ll be met with the scent of a fresh cortado, and a plate of rice and beans is bound to be steps away — whether you walk or salsa dance your way down the street.

South Beach has the hustle, the energy, the vibrant sense of adventure—but North Beach has the relaxation and escape. As Laura, a local radio DJ, shows us, when you want to transport yourself to another place and another time, North Beach is the place to do it. Historic hotels, unique Miami Modern architecture, beautifully quiet beaches, and some of Miami’s most interesting bars and restaurants make it a special place to explore.

Diego eats, lives, loves, and breathes Aventura. Run into him in Aventura Mall’s Art of Shaving and you’ll agree. One minute he’s touting the cocktails at Grand Luxe, next he’s recounting a date at Turnberry Isle’s Bourbon Steak Restaurant. And if you are craving for the ultimate in high-end shopping adventures, Diego can certainly spare a few tips. An advocate of all things Aventura, just ask him and he’ll point you toward the best pools, spas, and maybe even how to find yourself adrift on a lazy river.

Shayne, owner of Oxygene, an independent boutique located in Bal Harbour Shops, explains how Stanley Whitman founded Bal Harbour Shops, pursuing a vision that now serves as the heart of the village. Visitors continue to come from all over the world to spend the day in the shopping center that’s part rainforest, part retail destination. Of course, there’s more to Bal Harbour than shops -- when you’re ready for some outdoor recreation, the beach is mere minutes away.

Timothy A. Barber, executive director of the Black Archives, which makes its home in the historic Lyric Theater, explains that the establishment of Overtown as an important cultural center in Miami came from local and visiting artists who would go “over town” to their hotels, or to continue the party after their shows finished elsewhere in the city. If you want to experience an integral part of Miami’s culture, walk the streets of Overtown, visit the theater, look at the art on the walls, and don’t leave without getting some soul food in you.

Die Gegend beherbergt außerdem bei den Einheimischen beliebte Restaurants wie das People´s Bar-B-Que, gemeinnützige Musikprojekte, Kunstfestivals, Bauernmärkte und vieles mehr.
